Maria has dream ofstrange world in odd building a la John Malkovich where Chimpanzee is controlling peoples thoughts.  Fun wacky telling of story as scene?


Thought/Dreams last night and this morning of the cast teaching small dances to the audience in walk-around pre-show.

Everyone beginning very dressed a la “fictional characters” or perhaps dressing as part of the pre-show, a la Menouchkin.   And by end being naked and super simple.

Decided to go to Berlin Nov. 11-21 and be there for the work with Matthias.


In Guillermo’s performance theory seminar he asks about current concerns and “obsessions” in performance.  I admit to myself that the onlything I have been “obsessed’ with lately is bicycling.  How do I fold this into the work.  Can I trust this as information from my own “non-fictional body” or is it addictive consumerism feeding like a cancer on my sleep-deprived and lonely consciousness. 


Writing in Janet Papale’s class about bicycle obsession I think about how to make this work to my advantage , how to fold it into the piece. I have image of setting up a cycling trainer that is connected to a generator and powers something significant in the performance, requiring be to expend a significant amount of energy through an extended period of time.

David seems nice enough, is available and interested.  Needs no special access issues. Can do a few stairs and travels without a PA.

Left it that we would think about it a bit and decide by next week.


 4 hour Project/Budget meeting with Randy where we run through project budget and create a “real” version using only confirmed funds for the project. This is extremely satisfying and stress relieving.  We have enough funds at this point to pull offa fairly committed rehearsal/creation process.  Without more funds we can pay everyone$700 per week for 16 weeks (including performance weeks) This does not include touring which at the moment will be at least an additional 3 weeks.


Matthias confirms rehearsal space for Berlin.  I work on Blog and make first posts.


Dave Toole agrees to offer and signs on to project.

Meeting with YBCA,  Angela Mattox, Alexandra Quinn Randy, re: Creative Work Fund LOI.   Really interesting.  they will write and get draft back next week. 

Meeting with Randy and Julie to discuss Graivty admin structural changes.  Randy working into central admin role with Julie as Project Manager.  Julie wants more specificity in her job descriptions, which makes sense and I am happy to support.  At one point though she gets resistant to the idea that what we are describing sounds like she is being Randy’s assistant.  So in a way she wants a very exact amount of responsibility/authority.   I guess we all do.

In discussing the Davis iteration of the project we decide that Gravity staff’s main focus, first priority is making sure that the cast is all housed and welcomed comfortably.  Working with the Davis student production system seems necessary and so lt’s utilize that and see how Gravity staff can interface with them, or if Randy or Julie need to do that at all.  Randy’s connections in the department and his knowledge of Davis feel like they will come in handy.

Randy is taking on the housing problem,  Julie is organizing travel (Flights and arrival in Davis.)

Something I like about the simplicity of this.  Bodies in a space and anything can happen.  The sign becomes a sign by our creating a frame for it.


Daydreaming Ideas while reading Althusser,  The PiccoloTeatro: Bertolazzi and Brecht.  What if the audience is in multi-centered walk around mode and at some point the whole cast leaves and leaves them alone to look at each other for a long time. Could we get them to dance? What about a musical chairs game where we always have one less chair than audience members and something happens to them if they are caught out without a chair.  (Have to leave, have to be in some scene?)


Jörg, Claire and Matthias meet in Berlin.  Make cigarette paper puppets and improvise lovely music with them. Post them to blog


Maria and I are still in Brescia with her family.   Jörg, Matthias and Claire improvise a lot.  They create a number of musical events; lyrics to a song written through a “writing weave” collective process “Green Fun” is very silly but has a catchy tune.  Jörg composes a melody using the letters of each persons name in sequence.  Matthias and he arrange for Clarinet and Bass and Drums. the three of them record extensive improvisation n the large empty factory-ish room outside the rehearsal studio.  Lots of natural re-verb makes for a big cathedral sound on voice, trumpet and cello.


Maria and I return to Berlin and I go to rehearsal today.  I try to learn bass parts for two arrangements (name song and “drip song”)  We play games at a table


We play through results of the week and make a crazy improv with Maria. More table rhythm games. Everyone hitting me with drumsticks, not so lightly.

Met with Matthias to discuss musical strategies.  He is nterested in creating a kind of triggering program/device where the whole music could be played off of a single computer and interacted with sonically. Triggered by Jörg’s trumpet etc. I am open but skeptical.  Sounds like a potential technical nightmare and a big possible time sucker (Remember Touched program!!)   We listen through songs from the November Rehearsals

From surgically sculpted cyborg sex kittens and chemically enhanced superhuman road warriors to genetically engineered/selected wonder children - our bodies more than ever are shaped and marked by the imagination of higher and higher levels of performance.  Is the body obsolete?  A carbon based fossil shell just waiting for us to evolve out of it? Who decides what the body of the future will be?  What should be deleted?  What should be mass produced? Can you afford the body of the future?

UC Davis Creation Residency 2010

1/11/10 First Rehearsal. 6pmU-Club

Present – Me, David, Maria, Jörg Claire and Kaino.  Dani (Dave's PA)
Everyone has arrived, Thankfully.  I am relieved.  Still a bit ofrearranging this week on the housing front.
Kaino brings home made fruitcake, donuts and Tangerines from her neighbors tree.

We open therehearsal with a 3 minute check-in go-round.  Feels a bit clunky at first, but actually nice once people get into it.  David admits to feeling a bit freaked out by the whole context of our symmetry installation at Keith’s Too Much Event last night.

Then a lot of logistical talk.  Dates and such.

We decide that each rehearsal will begin with45 minutes of individual warm-up.  Everyone will be ready for group movement activity starting at 6pm.

We take a break and Kaino takes photos of everyone.

I propose a 30 minute observation score. In partners each person is observed for 30 minutes and then doer and observer report to each other.

With Maria watching, JörgChanges clothes cries, and then takes off his clothes and turns upside down with his hair flying up off his head.

With David watching, Claire is very minimal and sits on a yoga mat and sort of stretches. gets up to put on her socks.rubs her knee

At 23 minutes Jörg gets up and leaves the room.

Here is mine.  I am in love with these guys already.  Oh my god, that was beautiful..  I could invite people to watch that tomorrow.  The incredible simplicity of each of their presence was just stunning.  I may be just in a fucked up kind of sentimental mood, butthat was really exquisite. I need to do really nothing at all.

Jörg’s tears,  Claire’s eyes as she watched David, David’s face and the simplicity of his moving up and down between levels and just sitting on the table.  I must be losing my mind for sure, but actually no one but me really needs to like this piece.  I don’t have to sell any tickets.  There will be no real reviews.  I can explain away a weird moment of process to any presenters that happen to come through.

I loved that.

I wonder how my viewing as an outside outsider affected the proceedings?  I imagine so many different possibilities about this set up.  watching each other then everybody watching one person, then choosing an audience member to watch.  Copy?  Turn the theater inside out really.  (Fuck William Forsythe.)

I want Josh to make the Mondavi look like the U-Club. I want the audience to have the choice to follow people outside and walk into the space. David watching from the seats was good.  Jörg outside the windows. David with Maria’s hat on. 

I am really pleased.   I also feel a little sad.  It had a kind of sadness to it that I liked.

6-7 Sensing Score working through Proprioception, kinesthesic filters to be in movement and focusing on underlying sensations in the body that are not normally conscious.

 Then working through Hearing, Smell, and Vision as filters for shaping movement choices.

Reviewed material from Berlin.  Sitting around table passing claps then sounds, then layering a phase of counting with different tones.  We then moved into passing the 5 tones around the table in a star, which made the melody 1-3-5-2-4. Then layered numbers 1-4 over that then a four word phrase.  Brain Fuck but really fun.

ended with an improv trying to tell an improvised story around the table while maintaining the tone pass path.

Whole cast met in costume shop and went through stacks to pull fantasy costumes.

Sort of almost meltdown at Bistro Bar,  Claire is feeling freaked about improvising publicly,  Freaked about improvising in general.  David wants to know what we are doing? 

Guillermo is encouraging in a way – Saying” you are not really directing, it’s great.”  But this feels a bit weird, especially coming from him.  Thank God for Jörg who is mostly ready to go for anything and willing even to push into weirder less formed territory than anyone.

This was a good exercise,  we start to have a pool of returning images that re-inform each other in different ways as they return.  Guillermo’s work has definitely bumped up the level on visuality and symbolic content. at least for me and I think for the others as well.

3 hour improv -  feel incredibly sad. 

How do we find joy?  I am not afraid to make a sad piece.  A piece about loss and longing.  about letting go.  About what feels difficult or even impossible.

But it’s a challenge.

Can’t tell where the personal is totally overshadowing the art.  How much do I let in.

I liked our diagonal line to begin.
Gazing at the mannequin then Claire took it away.

How do we have an outside eye?  How can I be an outside eye?  Music?  need something up or we are going to kill them, and ourselves.

10/25/10 – Uferstudios – Studio 2 – First day back

Jörg not arrived yet.  Loaded into studio and did individual sessions with Claire and Maria. Still waiting on second box of props and costumes.  Studio is big, warm and beautiful.  Such a pleasure to be able to work here.  Fresh sound system, fresh Marley floor ( hope we don’t fuck it up too much). Still a bit of construction going on as they are still hanging the trusses for lights etc.

Claire session 1pm – 3pm

Worked on Claire’s Virtual Reality Hands solo.  Finally got to talk more about what she is doing there, working with her ‘butoh’ warm-up. moving, but interrupting as soon as a pattern becomes recognizable, she begins with thumbs, then moves to fingers and up arms until includes whole body.

I asked her to vary speed more, notice when an action associated to some realistic activity and interrupt this as well.

Worked with taking more time and letting some things really slow down.  Overall quality should remain somewhat frantic though, or maybe more like rapid with skill born out of familiarity.

also to notice, play withand interrupt symmetry.

IN play with crutches play between.  Crutch as object, Crutch as extension of self, Crutch as supportive elelment of the environment, Crutch as manipulator of the environment.

Once she begins to open out into space stay 3 dinmensional.  Careful about pulling both crutches off floor. Can still return to sitting on one at any time.

 slowing down and working with these variation this began to last 15 minutes


Worked with stuffing clothes. Not as interesting as fat suit which has built-in theatricality and simplicity. Asked Daniela to build another fat suit.

Worked with Roller skates. Especially interesting to work without letting them roll, so they become strange vestigial appendage.  Going to floor nice. Walking and building up to a run is nice.  Rolling floor work works.  could make ballet, en-pointe reference, but Maria not so interested.  I kind of like as silly reference.

Need to fix skate brake pads.


Had a nice class to begin the day.  5 students.

Maria, Claire, Bridge, Matthias, Daniela and then Yoann were all there.

Started with Remedial Curtis technique, working with porprioception, then did 30 minute observing exercise.  Would have gone longer but Matthias had to catch a train.

Then took a break.

Then we did a 30 minute say what you’re doing improv.  Nice sequence.  I am lazy,  The glove is disgusting, wonder

Waking up this morning anxious and troubled.  Not sure how to work exactly in this moment.  All of a sudden the status and PR investment we have poured into the installations feels a bit like a trap and I am feeling pressure that they should somehow be entertaining on a level I had not worried about before.  Thinking about format and duration and should we have a score.  How free should it be for improvising?  Is it valid just to do everything longer?  All these questions.  Scaring the shit out of me a bit.

I have to say that I kind of like this troubled morning state somehow though. Feels like a growing engagement with the actual creation of the piece that is more interesting than waking up worrying about the visa applications.  More interesting problems to solve.

worked with Maria on “ Contemporary Dance.”  She is in resistance mode and won’t go with any of my first suggestions, variation of Say what you do.

I realize I am mostly pretty happy with how this material looks as she improvises her way across the stage anyway, but keep trying. Partly responding to her desire to ‘be directed”.  Translation she wants to be directed but in the very particular ways she understands as ‘being directed.’ What I ask of her is apparently not directing, and only freezes her own process.  this reminds me so much of last project with Sara and Contraband.  I am a little sad to acknowledge that this feels like the last thing we will do together.  Working like this is not that fun or useful, although if you can hang in there and keep your sanity and use what comes up on the right way, it can produce very strong work. 11/18/10 -First Installation with public - Notes from Inside

This was definitely a new record for smallest audience for me.  I have done improves in tiny studios for more people.  I think the word is out that we are having problems and the installation moniker is confusing to people.  I think we had 7 paying customers last night.  Luckily everyone else on the crew and add up to about 10 people so we at least get to perform for someone.  But OUCH.  Maria was pissed off and wouldn’t even respond to reach outs.  I hope that can get better.

Left Potsdam at night after last show, packed van and drove to Ferry to go to England.  Everything OK with visas and permits at Border.  But we get stuck on the motorway in a giant blizzard and spend the night in the truck.  Arrive much later than planned in Liverpool.

 First Meeting in Lobby ar YBCA- Trying to feel why we are here.  Feels far away all the conceiving and planning and organizing.  These slightly stubborn ‘mature’ artists that don’t share a vision. Sat around and did a freewrite – trust what got you here.

Free write Yerba Buena –

 Stairway access light is bright we are here at a different time of day and not so bright.  How do our strange little characters exist in this world and why?  What is our piece actually about, Transformations. Should we be transformingin front of people or not what are our questions?  What is a body? Which of the things that we do underline this question. I like lying around in the space at different times. Fake glasses and wigs and costumes in lying around and inhabiting the space. The remnants of what we have done and might do.  Inspiring people to ask“What has happened here?” or What might Happen here?”  I like riding the little bike with a globe on the handle bars and a trophy.  Koan riddles. We could hand out glasses to people as they arrive to see magically what they might see.  How do we ask people to look differently?  We can do the gazing score?  Should we ask some people to do the gazing score with us?  We could invite some of the people that might participate in the group installation to just come and put on fake glasses and watch whatever happens in the space.  I would like us to improvise in the next days.  Perhaps it makes sense to just meet later and to talk a bit and then have 4 hours where we don’t talk, but just do what we feel like and then talk after ward. or talk and then work an hour and then talk some more. and then work some more and let the process be public in our little corner here. I like hanging out and asking what is the performance and what is the rehearsal.

Jög proposes to go through the piece looking at each of the objects and actions he is doing and to research their referential or symbolic significance.  I think  it is an interesting exercise.  Reminds me of stuff I used to do in Contraband that no one would really care about.  What if this were an actual part of the installation?  A computer with all these references on it.

Unpacked objects/costumes
I propose that everyone choose two or three images from material in the show that can sustain durationally as images. All begin in street clothes and glasses and change visibly in gallery at clothes rack. 

Images are:
Maria - Rollerskates, Jörg Duet, and Sleeping on Bed
Claire - object delivery and space man with lights and Godzilla, walking on me at end.
Bridge- Touch score as Bowery Red Man and then interacting with audience.
Jörg – Maria Duet – Trumpet playing Miles Davis.
Me – Gazing, reading books and chatting with people, riding bike, Getting walked on by Claire at end.

1/12/11 –  Rehearsal

Ran through proposals, as gallery was open this was practically a performance in and of itself-  need comfortable space for Claire to hang out and rest in between appearances. 
Adjusted durations a bit to keep activity in space within a good  range of density. My ride should start later and last two hours. Claire needs longer break after object score, but if she waits too long we don’t have time together with bike/light
Figured out boom box placement for Matthias sound score.

1/13/11Installation Performance

Small but attentive audience.  YBCA estimates 100 people over the 3 hour span.
Last minute addition I made signed ‘Sweat Prints’ for viewers to take home with them. This idea needs more commitment, nice paper and some kind of sealable container to really work well. But it is pretty fun anyway and makes a nice audience interaction.

1/14/11 Installation Performance

Video Documentationday – Laura Lukitsch brings camera. Slightly disruptive in one way and yet it adds to sense of ‘event’ through the gaze of the camera.
Paced better.  Audience in Glasses is really working. at beginning.
Maria and Jörg are hilarious and tragic, Bridge odd and lovely, Claire quirky and fun with Godzilla/Boyfriend.
Staff at YBCA seem also to be having fun with it.

Ran smooth,  no issues.  Everyone seems to have found their rhythms.
Strike and pack with Tony and Hope to transporton plane to Miami.

1/24/11Travel Day arrive Miami

Accommodations are interesting and funky.  An old inn near little Havana.   This is a car city, no really viable public transit except in the very central corridor along the beach.  Matthias arrives from Berlin.

At lunch I go to a Massage Thearapistfor my tweaked backwho turns out to do a kind of psychic healing and does a kind of reading on me that really helps me think through some of the emotional issues coming up in our process.  I get a really strong encouragement tonot try to make everyone happy

I decide to leave electric rolling doors open as audience enters and then close them for show.  Too much outside sound once show begins but nice border transgression for pre-show.

Lightprogramming notes moving lights are Ok but not perfect. I am impressed by Tony’s facility with them and we get lots of looks from 6 moving lights.  Some angles not perfect though.

Chunky but OK.  Issues with the tech booth as only real offstage space so traffic odd etc.

Completely sold out –Good run- Standing ovations. Strong positive response.

Post show discussion very positive

Important shift in group morale here. People getting on board and seeing it work.  Is this perhaps a cultural thing?  Is the piece working better here than in Berlin because I’ve made it anticipating or mobilizing more American values?  Or has it just gotten better? or both?

Guy from bike shop came to see show and pick up rented Cervelo S2.

He was really sweet and loved the show and hung out forever.

Pack up tight to get everything to airport in the morning.

2/3/11 - SF World Premiere


Tech/Dress Rehearsal – light energy.


Full house, smooth run, appreciative audience.

It really feels like the show has arrived here.  I think everyone is quite happy.

Bar on stage at intermission is a winner


Sold-out show, They add overflow chairs, exciting.

Good run.

Sold-out.  Union problem with the extra chairs they put out night before. Adding seating requires a union call with a 4-hour minimum.  Chairs stay for tonight since they are already out though.

Closing night, not quite as full, but great crowd.  very satisfying.

Strike, but leaving some stuff in storage for next installation process.

Yerba Buena Gardens Installation

Working with an all-star team of local SF Artists.  We took two days to share basic exercises from our DNFBprocess and created an installationin the Yerba Buena Gardens adjacent to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
